Help & Advice

Tyre advice without the jargon.

Understand tyre sizes, condition, pressure, seasonal choices and fitment before you buy. If you are still unsure, send us your registration or current tyre size and we will help you narrow it down.

Tyre size explained

What does 225/45 R17 94Y mean?

The size on the sidewall tells you the tyre width, sidewall profile and wheel diameter. The final numbers and letters describe load and speed capability.

225Nominal tyre width in millimetres.
45Sidewall height as a percentage of the tyre width.
R17Radial construction for a 17-inch wheel.
94YLoad index and speed rating. These must suit the vehicle.

Condition matters

Check tread, age and visible damage

A tyre can need replacing even when it still has visible tread.

01

Tread depth

Check several points across the tyre, not only one groove. Uneven wear can indicate pressure, alignment or suspension issues.

02

Sidewall condition

Bulges, cuts, exposed cords or deep cracking need professional inspection. A sidewall bulge should not be treated as a cosmetic issue.

03

Age

Rubber changes with age and use. If a tyre is old, cracked or has spent long periods unused, condition matters as much as remaining tread.

Tyre pressure

The correct pressure comes from the vehicle, not the tyre.

Use the pressure specified by the vehicle manufacturer. It is commonly shown in the owner's handbook, fuel flap, door frame or B-pillar. Recommendations may differ for normal and fully loaded driving.

  • Check pressures when tyres are cold where practical.
  • Re-check before long journeys or carrying heavy loads.
  • Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tyre sidewall as your normal target.
  • Investigate repeated pressure loss rather than continually topping up.
Pressure affectsGrip · wear · braking · fuel use

Incorrect pressure can change handling and accelerate uneven tyre wear.

Choose for your driving

Summer, all-season or winter?

There is no single best option for every driver. Climate, mileage, vehicle use and where you travel all matter.

Summer

Focused on milder conditions

A common UK choice for drivers who want dedicated warm-weather road performance and do not require a winter-focused tyre.

All-season

One set for varied conditions

A practical compromise for many UK drivers who want year-round convenience without seasonal wheel changes.

Winter

Cold-weather specialist

Designed for cold conditions and useful where winter temperatures, snow or regular European travel make dedicated winter capability important.

Fitment specification

Load index and speed rating

Size alone is not enough. The tyre must also be suitable for the loads and speeds specified for your vehicle.

94Load index

A coded value representing the maximum load the tyre is designed to support under specified conditions.

YSpeed rating

A letter code identifying the tyre's speed capability under specified test conditions.

XLReinforced / Extra Load

Some vehicles require reinforced or Extra Load tyres. Match the vehicle specification rather than selecting by price alone.

Punctures & damage

Repairability depends on where and how the tyre is damaged.

A small puncture in the main tread area may sometimes be repairable after proper inspection. Sidewall damage, structural damage, running while flat or certain previous repairs can make replacement necessary.

Do not rely on an external visual check alone. A tyre professional may need to remove the tyre from the wheel to inspect the inside.

Frequently asked

Quick answers

Can I use a different tyre size?

Only use sizes and specifications approved or suitable for your vehicle and wheel combination. Changing width, profile, wheel diameter, load or speed specification can affect fitment and vehicle behaviour.

Do all four tyres need to be the same?

Requirements vary by vehicle and axle. Mixing tyre types or substantially different tread patterns can affect handling, and some AWD/4x4 systems have stricter requirements. Follow the vehicle manufacturer's guidance.

Where can I find my tyre pressure?

Check the vehicle handbook or manufacturer label, commonly found inside a door opening or fuel flap. Use the vehicle's recommended pressure for the load condition.

What if I am not sure which tyre to order?
