How to read your tyre size.

Use the marking on your tyre sidewall to understand width, profile, wheel diameter, load index and speed rating.

225Width/45ProfileR17Wheel94YLoad / speed
225

Tyre width

The nominal width of the tyre in millimetres, measured from sidewall to sidewall under defined conditions.

45

Aspect ratio

The sidewall height expressed as a percentage of the tyre width. Here, the sidewall is nominally 45% of 225 mm.

R17

Construction & rim

R indicates radial construction. 17 is the wheel diameter in inches that the tyre is designed to fit.

94Y

Load & speed

94 is the load index and Y is the speed rating. These codes must be suitable for the vehicle's specification.

Where to find it

Look on the tyre sidewall

You will usually see a sequence similar to 225/45 R17 94Y. The vehicle handbook or manufacturer label can also specify approved sizes and pressures.

  • Check both front and rear tyres; some vehicles use different sizes.
  • Match load and speed specification, not only width/profile/rim.
  • Look for XL/Extra Load, run-flat or other specifications your vehicle may require.
  • If changing wheel size, confirm the complete wheel-and-tyre fitment rather than guessing an equivalent size.
