Load index and speed rating explained
Why the letters and numbers after your tyre size matter.
Size is only part of the specification
A marking such as 225/45 R17 94Y includes both tyre dimensions and service description.
Load index
The number identifies a coded maximum load capability under specified conditions. It must be appropriate for the vehicle.
Speed rating
The letter identifies the tyre speed capability under specified test conditions. Follow the vehicle manufacturers required specification.
Do not downgrade blindly
Buying the cheapest tyre in the same size is not enough if its load or speed specification does not meet the vehicles requirements.
